Over the last 50 years the Moderna Museet (a.k.a. Modern Art Museum) has built up an impressive collection that includes pieces by Picasso, Matisse, Miró, Duchamp and Rauschenberg. The permanent collection of paintings, photographs and sculptures is supplemented by temporary exhibitions, primarily concentrating on Nordic artists. The ‘1st at Moderna’ series opens a new exhibition devoted to a different artist on the first day of each month. The current building, designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo and built in 1998, provides an appropriately contemporary home for such a magnificent collection. The museum is located on Skeppsholmen, the tiny island just along from the Grand Hotel, which has great views looking over the water. One of the best ways to enjoy the museum is to come for the excellent weekend brunch at the Grand before exploring the collection. (Reservations necessary).
