Hg2 : The Hedonist

There are three ways of reaching the top of Monserrate: a ‘teleferico’ cable car, a ‘funicular’ rail track, and one heck of a climb, but it’s worth it, it’s one of the best things to do in Bogotá. Be warned: due to the high altitude at Monserrate, visitors get short of breath very quickly and even walking is strenuous. But when you get to the top of the mountain you are rewarded with the most spectacular cityscape views which give a true sense of the immense size of the capital. The mountain faces west and because of such is a popular place to view the sun sink come dusk. A simple white church, intended to harmonise with the beautiful natural surroundings, sits on the very top of Monserrate and serves as a religious pilgrimage thanks to ‘El Señor Caído’ (The Fallen Lord), a statue kept inside. In addition to the church, the peak of Monserrate contains several souvenier shops and Casa San Isidro, one of the best French restaurants in the city. Unfortunately, however, myth states that if you come here with a boyfriend or girlfriend then the relationship wont last, so if you’re superstitious then Monserrate isn’t the best choice for a romantic liaison.
