The Monte Rosa proves that you can’t judge a book by its cover; it’s one of the best hotels in Zermatt and flies completely under the radar, there is no sweeping driveway or array of international flags billowing in the breeze, rather just a small name plaque on a wall outside. Some walk past without even seeing it. But inside there are extremely well-appointed rooms steeped in alpine history, as the first successful climb of the Matterhorn set off from this hotel. The achievement is commemorated throughout the hotel with various pieces of mountaineering memorabilia. And if it was good enough for Winston Churchill when he was in town, then it’s certainly good enough for us. Check in and check it out.
