Morgante Cocktail & Soul

Found near the Porta Ticinese dock, Morgante Cocktail & Soul is, as the name suggests, a cocktail joint with soul – and a kitchen. Here, you can sip on a cool, crisp G&T while you wait for some gazpacho or a plate of rich Risotto alla Milanese. The tiramisu is also worth sticking around for – if the ambience wasn’t enough. But that would be surprising; this bar has atmosphere to spare.

Outside, the terrace is strewn with benches (perfect for two) that are strung with twinkling lights and wrapped in tendrils of sweet-smelling jasmine. This is the place to enjoy an aperitif as you watch the light fade on warm summer evenings. Inside, meanwhile, things get decidedly more sleek, with black tables and splashes of velvet. This is where you’ll find Massimo Stronati and Danilo Pentivolpe crafting all manner of delicious drinks behind the bar. The Il Barbiere, made with Champagne, pure black malt whisky, Peychaud bitters and a sugar lump, is a beguiling option. Or opt for a glass (or bottle) of wine from the selection on offer.

While the Navigli area is threaded with restaurants, bars, and people taking a nightly passeggiata along the canals, Morgante Cocktail & Soul still stands out. It started out as something of a secret for those who’d stumbled upon it at the end of the historic Lavandai Alley. But today it’s alive with guests every night. And it’s not just because of the drinks (although they’re great) or the food (even if it is elegant and moreish). But mainly because Morgante Cocktail & Soul exudes warmth and welcome. Making guests feel at home, while they sip cocktails under the stars, listen to live music, or simply settle in for an evening with friends.
