For lovers of Art Nouveau, Museum Mucha should be top of your list of things to do in Prague. The Czech Republic’s favourite artist-son, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was one of the most internationally celebrated artists of the Art Nouveau period.
rnAmong his most famous posters were those he designed for the great fin-de-siècle actress, Sarah Bernhardt. Mucha moved to Paris towards the end of the 19th century, where he spent time on individual commissions, designing advertising posters and shop façades. The Mucha Museum, a celebration of his art and life, is housed in the lavish Kaunicky Palace; the gallery space is located on the ground floor.
rnWorks are hung under the low-vaulted ceiling, with simple wooden floors and plain white walls showing off his colourful pieces to full effect. This is one of the most popular museums in town, and well worth a visit for a better understanding of the subtler undercurrents of the Art Nouveau movement.
