Mukammal means ‘perfect’ in Arabic, revealing this hotel’s impressive aspirations; but there’s also another rather sweet story behind the title. The owner named the hotel to honour his grandmother, Mukatay, and the warm hospitality she always extended to her guests: her portrait is in the lobby. The personal touch continues with the services offered to guests, including assistance with booking travel tickets, a range of excursions within Astana and the surrounding area and the opportunity to hire a car and driver. The 39 rooms are attractive and well-appointed, with mahogany furniture and jewel-toned soft furnishings, although the cheaper rooms are a little on the small side. There’s WiFi in the rooms, a tastefully-decorated restaurant offering local and European cuisine and even a little souvenir shop selling a variety of Kazakh bits and bobs. The location isn’t that central but a 10-15 minute taxi ride will take you straight to the heart of the Right Bank.
