The Museo Botero, one of the best museums in Bogotá, contains over 120 works by Colombia’s most famous artist, Fernando Botero, and also contains masterpieces from other artists both locally and internationally. The museum is set in a restored Colonial mansion, which is absolutely beautiful with a verdant central courtyard and plenty of natural lighting. Indeed, the building is worth a visit in its own right for the architecture alone. However, the content of the museum is truly spectacular and showcases stunning works by Botero including his version of Leondardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. The museum shows many of his latter works, with pieces that depict Colombia’s violence (see ‘Pablo Escobar’ and ‘Carrobomba’), and also selected works from his private collection-hung exactly as the artist decreed. The gallery also includes works by Picasso, Dali, Renoir, Matisse, Monet, Degas, Leger & Chagall.
