Museum of Contemp. Art
There’s always an interesting rota of high-profile, temporary exhibits from Australian and international artists at this wonderful example of museums in Sydney. Led by the marvellous Scotswoman director Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, the MCA has gone from strength to strength over the past few years – she’s managed to lure a bold range of sometimes controversial art, from celebrity snapper Annie Leibovitz’s naked (and pregnant) Demi Moore to the startling taxidermy horse by Italian l’enfant terrible Maurizio Cattelan. There’s always something to see and talk about, and the views across the harbour to the Opera House from the café aren’t half bad, either. Free guided tours run daily at 11am and 1pm and on weekends at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, though time your visit well – the MCA received a whopping multi-million dollar grant from the government in 2010, with extensions to the north of the building set for completion in 2012.
