Museum of Craft + Design
A diminutive but ambitious museum, the Museum of Craft & Design recently announced that it would be moving house to take up shop at a larger, industrial space just off the waterfront in the Dogpatch neighbourhood. The museum opened in 2004 and is attempting to amass a permanent collection, with plans to reopen its doors in the new location in January 2013. Travelling and home-curated shows are generally on display, with plans for larger exhibitions in the new space. What is the difference between art, craft, and design? A hint lies in utility. The objects on view here epitomise good design (that’s the design part), meaning a perfect marriage of beauty and utility, and are often rendered by hand (that’s the craft). Is it art? You decide.
