Hg2 : The Hedonist

Tel Aviv, much like the rest of the country, is a land of émigrés through and through. Nationalities from every corner of the world are represented in the traditions, cultures, and mannerisms of the local population. The Nanutchka embodies these complicated and often clashing facets, generating nightly chaotic bacchanalias and their resultant hangovers.

Founded a decade ago by Nina Shrier, the Nanuchka is an eccentric bar-restaurant, serving authentic Georgian cuisine in a maze-like four-chamber villa in the heart of classic Tel Aviv. While the food is great, many come relishing the debauchery that ensues once dinnertime is over. As the DJ takes over the mantle by the main bar, the music gets louder while tunes from every corner in earth blend in to revelry of raucous sound. Shots of Vodka will flow freely between the legs of both guests and staff who jump onto the bar-top for a round of sweaty dancing. Don’t let night Manager Ella catch you stoically looking on, as she will force you up there with a shot of the trademark Cha Cha, Which must be Georgian for ‘cheapest Vodka in the world’.

For those seeking a snack to complement the Eastern European raving, try the Red Caviar Bellinis, bite-size pancakes topped with creamed sour cheese and red caviar. The Hachapuri, a cheese-stuffed Georgian baked delicacy, is a must for anyone wondering what Georgian cuisine is about. For those seeking the holistic Caucasian experience, arrive by midnight on a Sunday for live music from the region, plate-breaking bar stomping included. Otherwise, grab yourself a Nanuchka – vodka cranberry with muddled mint leaves – and join the festivities, any night, all night.
