Negro de Anglona

Negro de Anglona is full of contradictions, this Italian restaurant in Madrid is part stately home, part minimalist resto, and part Moët bar. The site itself was one of the first modern eateries to open its doors in Madrid in the 1980s, breaking the existing mould by serving Italian cuisine in a city that was just waking up from the constrains of a dictatorship.

In fact, the history of the venue stretches even further back than that, the tunnel-like structure where diners now sit once being a passageway for adulterous royalty to move around the city undetected. Negro de Anglona’s current set-up is perfect for a long evening, starting with a glass of champers in the Moët bar, before you then head downstairs for dinner, and finally shuffle over to the bar for a few long drinks. Just be sure not to get lost in its labyrinthine layout.
