Neos
If Dubai’s newest mega-hotel wasn’t dwarfed by the gargantuan Burj Dubai next door, it would easily be one of the tallest buildings in the city – it’s certainly the best-lit, its mega-watt blue-and-white neon making it visible from space. Probably. Calabar, its poolside, sister watering hole is a much more low-level affair, while Neos is high-octane and very, very high up. From the 63rd floor you have a spectacular view over the city’s central (and often clogged) artery, the Sheikh Zayed Road, and an insight into quite how quickly the thousands of workers and forest of cranes have made Dubai the Middle East’s New York. Reached by its own elevator from the 61st floor, Neos screams money – it’s all chrome, giant chandeliers, button-backed banquettes and slightly snooty staff dressed in designer gowns – and you’ll need to be prepared to spend your own. Not even looking is free here – on Thursdays and Fridays they levy a Dhs100 cover charge on – but it is a stonking location.
