Newcomb Art Gallery
The Newcomb Art Gallery has its roots in Newcomb, the former women’s college of Tulane University, which gained fame in the 19th century for its art and pottery programme. Today the art school and its students are the happy beneficiaries of this history. The gallery, with its temporary exhibitions and permanent collection, can be reached with a streetcar ride and a stroll through the leafy campus. The Newcomb pottery and Art Nouveau silver (with a collection of student silver-working tools) are big draws-especially since Newcomb pieces have skyrocketed in value in recent years. The high-quality special exhibitions attract a serious art audience from throughout the region. Note: The gallery closes during the school’s summer vacation.
