Hg2 : The Hedonist

Noodle Bar

The tiny but sleek Noodle Bar, is located inside a restored industrial chic courtyard called 1949 – The Hidden City. The complex takes its name from the year the People’s Republic of China was founded and was once the Beijing Machinery and Electric Institute. With only 12 seats, Noodle Bar is packed at lunchtime with Beijingers hankering after traditional noodles. There is more seating in the garden but it’s worth elbowing your way into the counter to watch the chefs kneed and hand-pull wheat noodles like contortionists. Locals love the huge bowls of Beijing beef noodle soup – choose from tendon, tripe or brisket. Regulars rave about the flavor of the broth, which you can adjust to your taste with a selection of condiments on the counter including chili sauce, vinegar and soy sauce. Get in a little green with a side dish of sautéed lettuce or pickled spinach with peanuts. Wash it all down with a cup of smoky Oolong tea.
