Obaren (pronounced OH-bar-en) is quite unexpected. It’s an alternative music venue located at the back of Sturehof, one of the most dignified and historic of all Stockholm restaurants. By day the restaurant is the sort of place where you’ll find well-heeled grandparents dining with their grandchildren. By night, though, Obaren is home to DJs and live acts playing anything from bass-heavy hip-hop to hard rock, plus some soul and electro. The space also hosts regular art exhibitions. It has the feel of an old-school jazz club, but with an atmosphere that’s just a little more pretentious. The juxtaposition of the different parts of Sturehof has a lot to recommend it. After all, there aren’t many places where if you’re not into the music, you can take a few steps, grab a table, and have a red-jacketed waiter bring you a plate of some of the best traditional Swedish food in town.
