Ocenarium
Second only to the aquarium in Osaka, Lisbon’s Oceanario is the main tourist attraction at the former Expo site. Oceanario was designed by the American specialist architect Peter Chermeyeff, it contains over 25,000 fish, birds and mammals in four different holding tanks representing species from the Antarctic, Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
A large central tank containing all manner of tropical fish and fearsome hammerhead sharks can be viewed from different angles over two storeys. High-tech multi-lingual interactive displays explain the development of ocean life. The glass cube structure is set out on the water, with the spectacular Teleferico (cable car) running overhead. On a clear day the mammoth 11km Ponte Vasco da Gama bridge is visible.
