In a city that boasts more private zoos than it does pet dogs, it’s maybe unsurprising that live, nature doc-style entertainment has become de rigeur in Dubai’s nightspots. So clever old OKKU for carving a niche as the place to seen and be seen – by, erm, loads of jellyfish. Yep, the star attraction in this restaurant-cum-cocktail bar is a UV-lit ‘jellyquarium’. With such a show-stopping water feature located behind the talented mixologists’ heads, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the food wasn’t really the point here. Until you take a seat at one of the low-level tables or prop up the sushi bar and your perfectly-prepared Japanese fusion food arrives, that is – the rock shrimp is a revelation and the chocolate fondant dessert is worth the visit alone. For VIP privacy, the plush upstairs tables can be completely blocked off from prying eyes – yes, even from the jellyfish.
