Hg2 : The Hedonist

Olympia Cafe

Yet another one of those unpretentious hippy cafes in Cape Town frequented by beach species and aspiring artists. In an old Victorian building facing the harbour area, this is a thoroughly laid-back and typically hippy Kalk Bay institution, the type of place where local surfers and long-haired poets congregate, along with ladies of the upturned nose brigade on one-off shopping expeditions from the southern suburbs – all here to share the eccentric vibe and brilliant food. Interiors are rustic and old-fashioned; regardless, claim a table as quickly as you’re able because it gets seriously busy in here. It’s a grubby, groovy, laid-back atmosphere; a thrown-together sort of place which wears its lack of pretence (and sometimes service) conspicuously: a notice on the wall menu includes a reminder that there’ll be ‘NO SMOKING, SPLIT BILLS, SELF- DISCIPLINE, BULLSHIT’, and while they don’t serve mineral water, their tap water is free. A compact menu will include such fare as lamb liver with balsamic jus, seared (real) tuna nicoise, pickled fish, and large and memorable salads (the roast apricot, goats cheese and strawberries is out of this world).
