Berlin bars on Oranienstraße cater to heavy-metal moshers and indie kids, the Orient Lounge has higher expectations. A door lady keeps a watchful eye on guests who pass through the beaded curtains into a lounge akin to a Middle Eastern harem. Canoodling couples head for secluded corners, while larger groups find comfort in a comfortably cushioned room. Inspired by Moorish architecture, light twinkles through star-shaped wall carvings as guests relax with cocktails, herbal teas and water pipes. Despite the door policy, there’s no real dress code (this is Berlin!) and the young crowd are always casual. Oriental tapas is served in the lounge, but for the hungry more filling international fare is served at downstairs bar Rote Harfe.
