Hg2 : The Hedonist

Occupying a disused railway station next to Hackney Central, Oslo is a little slice of Nordic heaven in London’s East End. By day, Oslo’s a kitchen and bar. After dark, it’s a nightclub and live music venue, playing host to ultra-hip up-and-coming acts.

Food-wise, Oslo presents a sizeable, diverse menu that intermingles crowd-pleasing favourites like burgers and fries with indigenous Scandi eats such as pølse (flame-grilled Norwegian sausage with horseradish-flavoured beetroot and sourdough) or Nordic poke – a colourful bowl os smoked salmon, pickled cabbage and pineapple. There’s a healthy selection of draught and bottled beers, as well as cocktails and wine on offer to wash it all down.

Oslo’s weekend brunch, meanwhile, is particularly popular and, with dishes like the Nordic Cure (two eggs – any style – with chorizo, bacon, halloumi, avocado, grilled peppers and homemade chilli beans on a waffle) on the menu, it’s not hard to see why. It’s the perfect antidote to the night before – especially if that night was spent here, dancing the hours away.

At night, Oslo transforms into a two-room music venue, with a sound system worthy of a place at least twice its size. Upstairs, you can expect live gigs from indie bands like LUMP, whilst downstairs you can throw some shapes to the sound of everything from funk and soul to rock’n’roll. They also showcase some of the best emerging and established dance music out there, with previous performances from Deadboy and Doc Daneeka. But whenever you decide to venture to Oslo, the vibe remains cool, contemporary and classy.
