Hg2 : The Hedonist

Outdoor Trance Parties

Prepare for one of the most unapologetically hedonistic music marathon events of Cape Town’s nightlife, often in beautiful natural surrounds. With relentless, pounding beats churned out by the indisputable future-trend-setters of the local musicscape, the psytrance scene serves as a kind of tribal gathering for anyone who needs to let off steam, get wasted, dance like no one is watching, dress up, dress down, undress, drink, trip, or simply observe the whole spectacular performance unfold before them like a phantasmagoria of psychedelic excess. Depending on the size of the party, which varies according to who’s organised the event – the best are Origin (last weekend in January), anything by Alien Safari (including the massive New Year’s Rezonance Festival), Earthdance, and the Vortex party (in early-December) – there may be multiple dance floors (the main stage is always dedicated to full-on psytrance where the music is fast, furious and trippy), firedancers, stiltwalkers, costumed clowns, and all kinds of shenanigans. There are usually non-stop bars (unless the cops show up) and the music doesn’t let up until the final set has been played. If you’re planning to attend the entire party, arrive early to find the best possible spot to pitch your tent; take as much food and drink and whatever as you think you’ll need. If you’re going for a shorter period, decide carefully what kind of party you prefer – nights tend to be harder and (no pun intended) darker, often with a more intense and unrelenting sound; the sunrise set is always brilliant and uplifting and likely to make you want to stay for the rest of the day. If you want a flawless set, look out for a line-up featuring the always-excellent veteran DJ Bruce – but for something extra-special, the most interesting local producer-DJ working in Cape Town today is Adam Metcalfe (aka Headroom”)
