Palácio Ramalhete

The oldest parts of the Palácio Ramalhete date back to the 18th century, lending the historic townhouse an air of quiet refinement. Now a boutique hotel with 12 guestrooms, Palácio Ramalhete has inspired many creative types over the years (fans of Portuguese literature will recognise the hotel’s name from Eça de Queiroz’s classic novel “Os Maias”), as has its location in the bohemian Lapa district. Although the downside of this area means that the hotel is at a distance from the buzz of the city centre and the thrums of Lisbon’s nightlife, it’s worth it for the tranquility found at the hotel – especially when enjoyed poolside on the Ramalhete’s terrace.

Each of the 12 guestrooms (10 in the main house and two across the courtyard) has been decorated thoughtfully, taking the original features into account. Case in point: the beautiful “Old Kitchen Room” still features the townhouse’s grand old stone cooking fireplace, as well as wide flagstones on the floor. In addition to the generally exquisite décor throughout (think: white walls and chic upholstered sofas and rich, wooden furniture), there are handpainted Portuguese tiles in shades of blue, white and yellow, which are incorporated into the design to great effect.
