Hg2 : The Hedonist

Palau Musica Catalana

Even if you’re not an avid lover of live music, the Palau Musica is a sensational venue to take in a concert – be it jazz, gospel, opera or classical. Ornate lighting, huge gold horses and gilded seating adorn the central hall, and the acoustics are exceptional. Opened in 1908 and widely considered a landmark of Spanish architectural Modernism, the hall has been magnificently conserved, with the choir of the Orfeo Catala at the heart of the institution. It’s very much a living part of the city and was proudly declared a World heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The outside of the building, seen by day or night, is breathtaking – designed by architect Domenech I Montaner, the façade incorporates ceramic mosaics, glass and brick, while the domed roof over the central sections allows extraordinary light to cascade both inside and out of the Palau Musica. The foyer is the old headquarters of the Orfeo and currently houses the bar and an independent restaurant, both definitely worth checking out. A full rang of upcoming events (and there’s one almost every night of the week) is available through the music hall’s website and it’s simple to book tickets.
