Hg2 : The Hedonist

Seen as the dividing line between Central Tel Aviv and the ‘Heart’ of the city, Marmorek street is often overlooked as a mere fringe for both districts. And so Shimon Mashal, the veteran nightlife entrepreneur and bar owner, had quite the up-hill battle when he took over the venue formerly inhabited by the Kerouac.

Building upon the ‘straight-shooter’ formula of its sister locations, the Peacock is a twist on the classic Tel Avivian pick-up bar, combining a laid-back attitude with a great beer selection and a funky, upbeat soundtrack. Forgoing the assumed sleaze of dimly lit bars, Peacock allows for its guests to see with whom they are flirting. Wooden high-top and four-person tables are spread throughout the main hall, with the bar off to the side. The menu is written on a pair of chalkboards fit upon the back wall, an aesthetic choice utilized in all of Mashal’s bars.

Expect a crowd ranging in age from late twenties to mid thirties. The dress code is quite informal, with jeans and flip-flops completely acceptable. Peacock often holds a selection of Israeli microbrews, some of which have drawn much international attention and are well worth the small hike in price. Overall, Peacock is a beloved neighborhood bar, and can be a great choice for a date or relaxed night out, as well as for the initial drink before a big night out.
