Pegu Club
The harsh critics of New York cocktail bars gave a collective sigh of relief when this handsome, second-floor lounge – named for a storied British colonial officer’s club in late 19th-century Rangoon – opened its doors and offered a marvelously conceived drink menu; a transporting, Indochina-chic aesthetic; and a mission to mix every cocktail perfectly and maintain its integrity as you drink it (perfect ice cubes, glasses of proper size, proper storage and treatment of mixers and garnishes). Impressive in its sincerity and flawless in its presentation, Pegu Club is the brainchild of Audrey Saunders, a student of mixologist Dale DeGroff who honed her knowledge and skills while running Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle. Now that she’s got a chic playground all her own, she’s hitting it out of the park.
