Pharmacy Museum
One of the first licensed apothecaries in America used to run a drugstore on the site of the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum. For the last fifty years, the storefront has provided a glimpse into how medicine was practiced before the 20th century. Displays contain examples of earlier-and riskier-medications and treatments. Leeches, bloodletting cups, and other remedies that today sound noxious were part of yesterday’s medical kits. Most of the cures had little or no effect, but the medicines in the opium case at least made the patients feel better.
