Hg2 : The Hedonist

Plaza Athenée’s

The geraniums that festoon the Plaza Athenée’s façade are right on-brand, in emblematic lipstick red. It is, perhaps, the most glamorous of all Paris hotels, in a Sex and the City sort of way, with the neighbours to prove it: Christian Dior, Chanel and Louis Vuitton all have gleaming outlets on avenue Montaigne. The four-bedroom Royal Suite is the biggest in Paris, with its own steam room and Jacuzzis, a cosmetics minibar, and plasma TVs a-go-go; the view from the bathroom in the new Terrace Eiffel Suite comes and goes at the flick of a switch that turns the window opaque. The furnishings throughout are boudoir-meets-embassy, with velvety swags, fresh flowers and chandeliers; two out of the eight floors are art deco in style, the rest Louis XVI. The cocktail bar is fashionable and fun (See Drink), and the Alain Ducasse fine-dining restaurant truly impressive, especially the signature baba au rhum. Seasoned guests and passing statesmen are more likely to eat in Le Relais Plaza, the hotel’s top-end brasserie; Le Galerie des Gobelins is a Claridge’s-like experience for tea and cake. Finally, there’s the new Institut Dior downstairs, allowing high capitalism’s winners to live the dream even more profoundly.
