Plaza de la Cibeles
As well as being a major traffic junction, the intersection of the Paseo del Prado and Calle Alcalá are home to one of the most famous – and most photographed – monuments in Madrid, Plaza de la Cibeles. The fountain depicts the Greek goddess of nature, Cybele, drawn by two lions, while in the background is the 1904 Palacio de Comunicaciones.
This building used to be the central post office in the city, but has since been taken over by the council. Whenever Real Madrid, or indeed Spain, wins a big match, it is here that the fans will head – although the police will be waiting, ready to do anything to keep them from jumping in that famous fountain.
