When pop star Beyoncé is spotted coming out of an Italian restaurant located on a rather ordinary street in Södermalm, you know that something special is going on inside that kitchen. Portofino seemed to emerge from nowhere to become one of the new stars of the Stockholm dining scene. Certainly its location and appearance give little indication of just how good the food is. Peer in the window and it looks like any other Italian restaurant, and the menu sticks to the expected dishes: veal carpaccio, mushroom cannelloni, panna cotta, tiramisu. But the prices are fair and its success has been driven by word of mouth, rather than any cunning PR strategy. People ate here, loved it, and urged their friends to visit. It’s as simple, and as wonderful, as that.
