Proud Camden
Camden should indeed be proud as a centre for London nightlife – this 10,000-square-foot, 200-year-old ex-horse hospital that once nursed nags injured from pulling canal barges is gallerist Alex Proud’s unstoppable party space. Proud Camden started out as a photography gallery in the nearby Gin House, only to become better known for throwing riotous parties, seeing over 1,000 live-music acts. Eventually Alex Proud conceded, opening this vast new venue in 2008. By day, a gallery exhibiting moody shots of rock royalty, by night, the volume is maxed, the dry ice pumped and the queue psyched, waiting to see the likes of Dizzee, Florence Welch and VV Brown perform, as well as regular sets from DJs Queens of Noize (who run Thursdays’ cheeky Smash & Grab nights), Jodie Harsh and Kissy Sell Out. With interior design from Russell Sage Studio and Proud’s wife, the craft queen Danielle Proud, the old stables have been converted into luxury playpens complete with, variously, Guitar Hero, karaoke, table football and pin-ball. A new restaurant, plus summer barbeques, a smoking terrace large enough for all Camden’s show ponies and boys out to stud, and celeb spotting of the Mark Ronson/Geldof scions/Sadie Frost variety, makes for unbridled hedonism.
