Puerta Uno

You score many a Brownie point for darkening this doorstep. Puerta Uno is the underground bar in a dark Belgrano street that nobody likes to talk about.

There is a number of reasons for this: first, people come here because they love to think of Puerta Uno as a secret bar available only to those good-looking or trendy enough to know the owners, Marcelo and Roberto. Second, the cocktails are some of the most nurtured in the city – sake and fruit mixes are the barman’s speciality – and at AR$15 are just expensive enough to make the bar hip but not overpriced.

Third, the DJ mixes club classics with tasteful rock tracks, allowing the refreshingly unpretentious crowd (Belgrano is a down-to-earth neighbourhood next to Palermo Hollywood) to enjoy themselves without feeling cheesy and uncool.

Lastly, Marcelo changes the décor every three months to keep the bar fresh. It helps that his mother leases out stylish bar furniture for parties as a profession and advises on flowers – Peruvian lilies are popular here. Oh, and Roberto’s father, a footballing legend, won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978, which basically categorizes him as royalty.

Look for the Harley Davidson motorbike outside the ‘hidden’ entrance and ask for Robertiño or Marcelo, or you will be denied entry.
