Qbic London City Hotel

What of budget accommodations in London? It’s a hospitality sector that’s oft neglected – and which rarely seems to stretch beyond dire hostels or mates’ sofas. But then, there’s the Qbic London City Hotel.

Located at the nexus of Shoreditch, Aldgate and Whitechapel, the hotel caters well to its demographic: young-ish weekenders richer in taste than actual cash. The first UK location of the Dutch import has more than a whiff of continental design about it – think bright pops of colour, modular fittings, and kooky design accents in the ground-floor common space. Rooms are simple but high functioning. Free-standing units that house beds, bathrooms and are accented by large-scale photos dominate each room.

The end result is far less workaday than that would suggest. Qbic has splurged on its mattresses, which are comfier than those at hotels several notches up the price ladder. Rain showers are ideal for post-travel refreshing. And the minimalist rooms are wonderfully quiet and dark, which means, even in the relentless East End, you’ll sleep dreamily – and won’t have to share a room with 20 other strangers.
