Just below pavement level, Rae café is a cosy place to sit and watch the legs of the world go by. With perfect views of the Old Town Hall with its national and city flags – and the medieval roofs of Hanseatic merchant houses, the location is unbeatable.
There is a pleasant, subterranean feel to the place, which doubles as both coffee shop and wine bar. Like many Tallinn cafés, Rae serves light meals including salads and delicious local soups – and a couple of cakes, although the pastry selection is limited. Choose from a mind-boggling range of Italian coffee styles, from ‘espresso lungo’ (watered down) and ‘espresso corretto’ (with cognac) to caffé latte flavoured with toffee, amarillo or vanilla.
You can sit in a nice little alcove or stand at the window and just stare out into the world. There may be too many Scandinavian tourists for your liking but the atmosphere is good. Owned by Estonians with their hands on a good Italian coffee machine.
