Red Capital Ranch
For something more rustic try the Red Capital Ranch in a private valley about an hour outside of Beijing. Located in a restored Qing dynasty stable with magnificent views of the Great Wall, it’s the only eco-resort in the capital. There are ten unique residences spread over the 50-acre property each with a blend of Chinese, Tibetan and Manchurian architectural details and decoration. Here guests can go horseback riding and dine al fresco on courtesan benches in a stunning river setting. Why not have the staff prepare a picnic lunch and explore part of the Great Wall dating back to the first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, which lies on the estate. The Tibetan Tiger Lodge and Warlord’s Room are decorated with Republican era memorabilia and offer a selection of fine wines and cigars. The Manchurian Hunting Lodge prepares gourmet wild game and specially made teas served with a bit of natural rock sugar. Guests can also take a page from Sting and enjoy the Tibetan Tantric Space Spa with treatments using rare Himalayan herbs and secret Tibetan oils.
