Red Gate Gallery
Located in the 16thcentury Dongbianmen Watchtower, the Red Gate Gallery opened in 1991 as one of the first private contemporary art galleries in China. Almost twenty years later, it is still a very important space with a curatorial program directed by Brian Wallace focusing on established Chinese artists. The gallery represents noted mixed media artist Chen Qingqing who uses natural materials to make traditional Chinese items such as a qipao, which can also be seen on display in the lobby of the Opposite House hotel. The work of renowned painter Chen Yufei, also represented by Red Gate Gallery, provides a commentary on China’s rapid industrialization and urbanization.
