Riad Enija

A wonderfully eccentric designer hotel in Marrakech, Riad Enija was created by Swedish architect Bjorn Conerdings and Swiss designer Ursula Haldimann. They have transformed this 200-year-old silk-trader’s townhouse, or rather four connected spaces (around three-quarters of it is still intact) into a living, breathing work of art. The pair collect far-out contemporary pieces, and juxtapose their personal mementos against more traditional decorative touches. Hence the 16 suites – which have names such as ‘Lion’, ‘Chameleon’ and ‘Prince’ – are kitted out with sculpted wrought-iron four-poster beds, silk floor cushions, Chantal Saccomanno tables and Alain Girel/Mark Brazer mirrors. It can all be a little overwhelming at times, but care has been taken to ensure the more riotous ensembles are balanced by calmer rooms and spaces, adding up to a charmingly eccentric and unique atmosphere. In addition to the rooms, there’s a terrace, a jungle of a courtyard, a beauty parlour, a Moroccan kitchen and a large public salon – all of which are maintained by a troupe of 14 girls who float around in elegant red outfits.
