Run by the owners of Riad Azzar, Riad Siwan is a jewel among the riads in Marrakech and was a labour of love that took three years to renovate. Dutch owners Cees and Maryk like to say that Riad Siwan starts where Azzar finishes, which, given the high quality of Azzar, is quite a statement. But it’s somehow true. The interiors have been individually designed by the owners alongside traditional craftspeople from Marrakech and Rabat as well as European designers and sculptors. The end result is a sophisticated and distinctive mix of contemporary light features and chandeliers, hand-made beds and furniture, hand-woven curtains and antique furnishings. The seven suites are generously sized and gorgeously appointed, some with bathtubs, but all with marble shower cubicles. The atmospheric dining area is particularly striking: tall columns support a roof and central skylight that allows light to cascade onto a crystal chandelier in the shape of a raindrop shower. There’s also a 300 sq meter roof terrace with sundeck, plunge pool, lounge area and “tower” that overlooks the pink city. Fantastic food is cooked in-house and the manager will do everything in his power to ensure a perfect stay. Highly recommended.
