Run by ultra-hospitable Belgian couple Delphine and Jean-Francois, Riad Tchaikana is simply one of the best value-for-money riads in the Medina. Delphine used to jaunt around Africa looking for artefacts and crafts to trade in the art store she had in Brussels before moving here. Now her collection creates a tasteful sub-Saharan theme throughout this slickly minimalist haven of tranquillity. Wall hangings, furnishings and ornamentation at Riad Tchaikana are strewn carefully across a backdrop of restrained browns and beiges in rooms as big as suites, and suites that could double as aircraft hangars. The bathrooms are features in their own right, voluptuous and rustic with beautiful touches such as tadelakt basins. Downstairs, much of the original 19th-century design has been kept intact (stucco detailing, cedarwood doors), and surrounds a romantic courtyard overlooked by orange and citrus trees and enclosed by rooms and salons. There’s WiFi access and a wide range of music and books, and the owners are relaxed, hip and very knowledgeable about local culture, making this a great option for style-conscious travellers.
