There’s nothing nouveau about this Riche. This restaurant and bar has been here since 1893, reputedly modelled after the Café Riche in Paris. However the name is entirely appropriate. Every evening you’ll hear the steady pop-pop-pop of Champagne bottles being opened for a distinctly affluent crowd of Stockholmers including the occasional Swedish celeb.

Its location at the head of Birger Jarlsgatan, just a short walk from Stureplan, makes it an ideal starting point to meet friends before a night out hopping from bar to bar. Riche gets busy from the minute people start to leave work and later in the evening there’s usually a bouncer on the door to keep the crush inside manageable. The best time to visit is early evening, when you can still catch the bartender’s eye to get a drink and move around with some degree of comfort. The food is great, but at some of the tables be prepared to get jostled as the crowd grows.
