Ristorante Berton
The Porta Nuova and Varesine districts, much like many areas in Milan, benefitted from city’s hosting of the World Expo in 2015; there are new buildings and businesses springing up all over the place. But perhaps one of the biggest boons to these particular areas is the cluster of restaurants from Michelin-starred chef Andrea Berton, which includes Pisacco and Dry. Ristorante Berton is one such, and stands out from the rest by bearing the chef’s name. And so it should. This Italian restaurant really showcases Berton’s talents, marrying bold techniques and creative ideas with traditional flavours to create sensational dishes.
The à la carte menu is peppered with dishes like Sicilian red prawns raw and cooked, served with crispy amaranth, Taggiasca olive oil and beetroot sorbet, and lobster served with daikon, pink sauce and coconut-lobster soup. Assembling your ideal meal is surprisingly challenging with all that’s on offer. The tasting menus, on the other hand, remove this pesky element of choice and put you in the chef’s hands; at Ristorante Berton, that’s a pretty safe place to be. Moving through morsels of scallop to wild asparagus with hazelnut cream, yolk egg and beer, and then intriguing dishes like peas and buffalo mozzarella ice cream, you can happily sit back and enjoy the culinary ride. There’s even a tasting menu devoted entirely to broths, from crab and Gran Padana broths to chocolate, and everything in between. Whatever you choose, a meal at Ristorante Berton is one to remember.
