River Cafe

Not many bistros in Cape Town can boast top chefs. The least-hyped of three excellent eateries of the fabulous Constantia Uitsig estate (see Sleep and Eat), the River Cafe has always done fresh, seasonal, unpretentious fare, and is on course for greatness now that it’s been taken underwing by Luke Dale-Roberts, hailed in 2009 at the country’s top chef. He’s appointed Scot Kirton to head up the kitchen here and together they plan to transform this laid-back and sociable gathering spot into the country’s top bistro. It’s a casual, country-style venue that’s open all day (recently extended into evenings) and is extremely popular at lunch when well-to-do ladies pop in to share the latest gossip over selections from a daily-changing menu that includes asparagus and porcini, poached duck egg, and an excellent fish pie with smoked haddock and prawns. They’ve developed an organic garden and plan to introduce increasing quantities of their own produce, including meats and cheeses and salmon, whilst produce that’s brought in is artisan-sourced and top-quality. There are also plans to build a smokehouse with an organic, farmy sort of feeling.
