Roïalto
Housed in an old factory, the most colossal of bars in Milan, Roïalto, is something of a drinking factory itself. But with a sophisticated 1940s Cuban theme (and a 30-metre antique wooden bar shipped over from Cuba), it’s classy and hugely popular.
Choosing where to sit is the hardest task, in what feels like a wartime aeroplane hangar, teeming with niches of low-slung retro furniture in a jungle of tropical plants, Cuban antiques, modern cubist art and kitsch. It’s so big that there’s room for this eclectic mix (there’s also a restaurant, a summer terrace and a live DJ who plays imaginative tunes). And there’s room for everyone – despite this up-and-coming street’s remote location, all walks of life populate Roïalto.
The only (‘positive’) discrimination seems to be with the choice of bar staff, all from the subcontinent of India (similarly at its sister bar Milano). Added to this leafy, forties cocktail scene it gives the bar a colonial feel. Join the queue at the pesky cassa system.
