A trip to this cushion-strewn rooftop hangout is a leisurely experience. It’s actually set over two levels, but the best sipping spot, predictably, given the name, is accessible by rose petal-strewn stairs and affords a sterling sea vista. In fact it’s one of the only places in town that you can get a real sense of quite what an odd island the Palm really is – looking out over the Gulf, you can see the multi-lane highway that leads out to the footballers’ favourite frond-end villas and identikit apartment blocks that resemble nothing so much as an elongated council estate. Set around a central, igloo-shaped dome with eerily-lit lilac portholes, there are low-level tables dotted about in the open air and big square booths under vast pergolas. Service can be slow, but you’ll almost certainly stay here well into the wee hours, so just sit back and relax.
