Every Tuesday night, there is a small corner of Tokyo that is alive with the sound of rock music: the Ruby Room. A diminutive nocturnal space located on the fourth floor of a plain building on a hill in the tangle of Shibuya lanes best known for its love hotels, the club is a mecca for rock lovers. And among its most legendary nights is Tuesdays’ Open Mic sessions which attract an eclectic array of cosmopolitan musicians happily prepared to take centre stage.
Other nights range from reggae and house to dub and techno – with previous performers ranging from Basement Jaxx and Tricky to Massive Attack and Aphex Twin. A low key, un-styled setting combined with friendly staff and a colorful mix of revelers makes it a popular and intimate spot on the nocturnal music map of Tokyo.
