Rupert Museum
An enviable collection of around 350 pieces, this is one of the finest contemporary South African art galleries in Cape Town. The personal collection of Anton and Huberte Rupert, it showcases many their favourite artists, including Irma Stern (see earlier), Maggie Laubser, Jean Welz, and the sculptor Anton van Wouw. It’s a straightforward gallery, with clean, pared down exhibition areas in big, barnlike wings and few frills – nothing is allowed to detract from what’s on display. Some think it’s a tad bland, and there’s certainly nothing to excite the contemporary art lover, but there’s clearly been a conscious decision by the owners (who have money to burn) to avoid any hype; simple notes on wall panels provide artist background, but for most of your exploration, you’re on your own to simply figure out which artists you like and immerse yourself in artworks, some of which will move you in inexplicable ways.
