Swedes have one of the highest rates of boat ownership in the world, and during the summer an armada of private yachts heads out from the city and into the archipelago. Many keen sailors head for Sandhamn, an island in the archipelago that’s a popular stopping-off point for yachts. Each summer there’s a famous boat race, the Gotland Runt, organized by the Royal Swedish Yacht Club, which goes out of Sandhamn and around the Baltic island of Gotland.
