Hidden among the winding back lanes of Jingumae is an unexpected sight: a tomato red façade covered in abstract sculptures and technicolor graffiti. Welcome to Design Festa gallery. The eye-catching edifice is home to a hip rotation of young artists – and best of all lurking behind the building is a cosily relaxed restaurant Sakuratei.
Sunglasses-inducing, achingly bright graffiti-style art lines the walls while creative young locals sip glass after glass of ‘nama birru’ (draft beer). But a highlight is preparing your own dinner: the menu is filled with okonomiyaki – an Osaka specialty best described as a cross between a Japanese style omelette and pizza – which is cooked on a sizzling hot plate built into the table.
For the unacquainted, both menu and animation-style instructions are available in English. Highlights include the seven-topping Sakura-yaki brimming with pork, squid, shrimp and mushroom.
