Hg2 : The Hedonist

San Carlo

Close to Da Vinci’s Last Supper but tucked away down a side street, San Carlo (no connection to the San Carlo in town) is spared the passing tourist trade. A classic pasticceria, gelateria and confetteria, it’s a bit thin on savouries, but is rich with olde-worlde charm and courtesy. rnrnIts literal ‘tea salon’ is prettily decorated with repeat patterns of quaint crimson teacups on vanilla fabric walls and curtains; even the tea service has this same teacup motif. Its banquettes of striped plum satin cushions are plumped after every sitting by waiters who are more like butlers, and Liberty details such as cornicing and stylized parquet flooring add to a sense of old-fashioned decorum. rnrnFruit tarts piled high with fresh fruits, cakes in the shape of roses and ice-cream sundaes from its gelateria on Via Magenta are just a few of the indulgences on offer – there’s no menu, but there’s plenty of inspiration in its enticing displays.
