Satsuma Cafe
While the culinary delights of New Orleans are legion, you may find you need respite from the po’boys and gumbos. And that’s where Satsuma Cafe comes in. It’s just the place to get your bearings and recover from the excesses of the night before with a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, or a fresh, nutrient-packed juice. Whatever your recovery poison – whether you crave pillowy-soft scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, or a mate latte – you’re bound to find it here.
Found in the boho environs of Bywater, Satsuma Cafe is a beloved part of the neighbourhood, packed with in-the-know locals and well-read tourists throughout the week. In fact, it’s as vital to the daily routines of many Bywater denizens as it is to those living near its sister location in Uptown/Carrollton, close to the bustle of Tulane.
Art-filled and colourful, Satsuma Cafe is a warm and welcoming space. The day’s goodies are listed on the blackboards, but try not to get too attached to any dish in particular (if you can). The owners Peter and Cassi Dymond are committed to sourcing local, organic produce so if it’s not in season, it might not be on the menu. But that just means that there’s something to look forward to in the future, and a brand new delicious dish to tuck into now. If you’re lucky, kale will be the veg du jour, and you can dive into a salad of avocado, lacinato kale, egg, cherry tomatoes, bacon, parmesan croutons and a creamy garlic dressing. It’s healthy, but it’s got gastro style. You are in New Orleans, after all.
