Save Our Cemeteries
Gothic tombs and spooky sculptures fill New Orleans’ above ground cemeteries – and Save Our Cemeteries wants to show you around. In the early days of the city, the ground was too swampy to dig a grave. The St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery is the final resting place for voodoo queen Marie Laveau and civil rights figure Homer Plessy. Anne Rice’s fictional vampire Lestat frequented Lafayette No. 1 Cemetery. Save Our Cemeteries, a local non-profit dedicated to preserving these treasures, offers walking tours of Lafayette No. 1 Cemetery in the Garden District and St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery in the French Quarter.
